

The boy's antics, which include attempted scalping and constant demands for attention, wear down Bill's nerves. In the meantime, Bill is left to deal with the rambunctious and unpredictable Johnny. Sam decides to go to the nearby village of Poplar Cove to get a sense of how the kidnapping has affected the town and to send a ransom letter demanding $1,500 instead of the original $2,000.

Sam and Bill are surprised by how much Johnny enjoys his time with them and how uninterested he seems in returning home. Johnny, a ten-year-old with an active imagination, quickly becomes absorbed in playing games and taking on the role of "Red Chief," an Indian character he creates. Sam and Bill abduct Johnny one evening, and despite the boy's spirited resistance, they manage to take him to a cave in the mountains. The two men believe that Ebenezer will pay a ransom of at least two thousand dollars for his son. They choose a small town called Summit in Alabama as their target and decide to kidnap Johnny, the only child of an important citizen named Ebenezer Dorset. Henry, two men named Sam and Bill Driscoll hatch a plan to kidnap a child and demand a ransom in order to raise enough money to buy some land.
